Amtrak Senior Discount
Quick answer: Amtrak gives passengers 65 and older 10% off most rail fares on most trains. Just choose “Senior” when you book. It isn’t 15% at 62 anymore, and you’ll need proof of age.
What the Amtrak senior discount covers
The 10% comes off the rail fare on most routes. A few things aren’t included:
- Sleeping car and roomette charges.
- Some Amtrak connecting services, such as certain buses.
- Other discounts. You can’t stack it with a different deal.
Some senior guides also list Saver fares, business and first class, the Auto Train and weekday Acela as excluded. Check the fare details when you book.
How to book a senior fare on Amtrak
- On amtrak.com or the Amtrak app, set the traveler type to “Senior.”
- The discount shows up in the price automatically.
- Carry ID. Amtrak says proof of age is required when you buy and on the train.
On cross-border trains run with VIA Rail Canada, the senior age is 60.
Our tip: compare the senior fare with sale fares. A sale can beat 10% off, and you can only use one.
