Your Birkenstocks days are numbered, because fall is finally here. You’ve probably already brought a poncho or pair of jeans out from hibernation, but now comes the fun part: shoes. There are lots of fun new trends to try this season, which, thankfully, are comfortable to boot. We’ve rounded up our favorites.
Stacked Mules
Hallelujah, toothpick-sized heels have been stamped out by stacked heels. Chunkier versions of everything from kitten heels to booties will be hitting sidewalks soon. But we find the return of the ’90s mule most exciting. This classic slip-on style cropped up again last summer and has been going strong, stealing the show at Fashion Week and being spotted on leading ladies. They have a lengthening effect on any outfit and are incredibly comfortable. Mules’ straightforward structure allows designers to experiment a bit more with details, such as tassels and faux fur, and so can you.
Lace-Up Heels
Fall’s answer to the gladiator sandal is the lace-up heel or boot. Strappy shoes were strutted on runways from New York to Paris. Some featured laces as thick as ribbons; others added studs and ruffles. But those of us who don’t catwalk for a living are better off keeping things simple. Laced-up, heeled sandals can be worn as often in the fall as they can in the spring. Simply add a pair of tights underneath for a flirty look. Boots with laces up the back, like a corset, are ubiquitous, so try a pair that laces up the front. Better yet, slip on a zip-up boot with laces wrapped around the shoe itself just for kicks. Wear these with a shift dress so your shoes get all the attention.
Over-the-Knee Boots
Thigh-high boots are the most sophisticated shoes for fall. Not only are they the warmest option of the season, but also, even the most basic pair will turn heads. While flats are perfect for traipsing around town, heeled thigh-highs pair well with almost any outfit, day or night. A mini skirt or dress will make life easier on you, but if you must wear pants, opt for super skinny jeans that can be tucked in. Try a festive fall color on for size, such as emerald green or burgundy red. And if your boots lack laces or a zip, be sure that they have a pull tag so you don’t need a hand getting them on and off.
This fall’s new crop of footwear may be a bit edgier than usual, but fear not, for one pair of amazing shoes can jazz up a whole wardrobe of last season’s clothes.
