How to Host a March Madness Party

Game on…

The arrival of spring means one thing. No, not birds and bees, but March Madness! Even non-basketball fans have to admit that the competitive energy is contagious. So what better way to celebrate this sacred sports event than by throwing a party? From sports-themed decorations to basketball-shaped snacks, here’s how ensure your March Madness party is a slam-dunk.

First, pick a color palette. If you and you friends are all cheering for the same team, this one’s a no-brainer. But a mixed bag of fans can make things tricky. To keep the festivities on friendly turf, outfit your home in classic NCAA colors: orange and black. We’re talking orange-and-black posters and streamers, orange-and-black plates and napkins, orange-and-black cups and coasters… you get the picture. A close game is sure to work up a hunger, so serve sports bar-style finger foods—chips and dips, wings and sliders—in basketball-themed serve ware, like a tray that looks like a mini court. As for refreshments, dunk sphere-shaped ice “cubes” into drinks.

Although your guests’ eyes will be glued to the TV most of the night, consider some half-time entertainment. A basketball hoop and foam balls are fun for everyone, not to mention, affordable. If this is an al fresco function, toss a floating hoop into the pool, but if you live in cooler climes, be sure to clear the indoor “court” of breakables before you start shooting three-pointers. When it’s time for everyone to take their seats, set out folding chairs, complete with mesh cup holders, so it feels as though you’re tailgating. One of the best ways basketball fans show their spirit is by wearing their team colors — where else? — on their faces. Get creative with a face-painting kit; you’ll score points with kids and adults alike.

Last but not least, dress up as a referee with a whistle, to boot. Your guests will think you’re a fan-tastic host.
